SLAS STUCO Talent Show Highlights & Winners Recap

The SLAS Student Council hosted an unforgettable Talent Show featuring 17 finalists from Grades 1–12. After a competitive audition process, students took the stage with an impressive range of talents — from singing and piano to Taekwondo, ballet, hip hop, Indian dance, soccer dribbling, and guitar. Every performer brought creativity, courage, and heart, making this one of our most memorable shows yet.

Primary Division (Grades 1–5)

1st Place — Soyi Choi & Irene Lee (Grade 3), Taekwondo Soyi and Irene delivered a dynamic Taekwondo routine filled with synchronized choreography, powerful kicks, and impressive board‑breaking — both on stands and in mid‑air. Their performance electrified the audience from start to finish.

2nd Place — Ali Alkhatib (Grade 4), Piano Ali impressed the judges and audience with a confident, expressive piano performance that showcased musicality and technical skill well beyond his years.

3rd Place — Sophia Lamb (Grade 2), Soccer Dribbling Sophia wowed the crowd with a rhythmic soccer‑dribbling routine set to Waka Waka, blending athletic precision with performance flair.

Secondary Division (Grades 6–12)

1st Place — Sophia Jimeno, Max Popowitz, Tanuj Padaliya & Chris Hwang, Funk Pop Dance This 12th‑grade group lit up the stage with a high‑energy Funk Pop dance performance to Standing Next to You. Their sharp choreography, musicality, and polished stage presence had the audience cheering throughout.

2nd Place — Apple Mun, Vocal Performance Apple delivered a powerful and heartfelt vocal performance of So Easy by Olivia Dean, captivating the audience with her tone, control, and emotional expression.

3rd Place — Olivia Chen, Violin Olivia performed Preludio from J.S. Bach’s Partita No. 3 in E Major, showcasing remarkable control, clarity, and expressive phrasing. Her interpretation highlighted both technical mastery and musical maturity.

Every finalist brought something special to the stage, and the entire SLAS community should be proud. This year’s Talent Show was not only a celebration of student expression but also a testament to the dedication and leadership of the SLAS Student Council, whose careful planning and hard work ensured a smooth, well‑organized, and truly memorable event for all.

SLAS “Fire” Art Competition Showcases Powerful Student Artwork

Primary Winners

1st – Emily Park (G4) Emily’s painting delivered a strong environmental message about preventing forest fires. She used vivid color and contrast to show both the beauty of nature and the danger fire can bring when not respected.

2nd – Soyi Choi (G3) Soyi’s painting, “One single match brings a warm love,” portrayed fire as a gentle source of warmth and connection. Her soft tones and expressive imagery highlighted the comforting side of a single spark.

3rd – Sophia Lamb (G2) Sophia created a detailed 3D campfire scene using pipe cleaners, leaves, sticks, and other natural materials. With tiny handmade s’mores, hot dogs, and a cozy fire pit, her piece—“Fire brings joy”—captured the fun and togetherness of gathering around a campfire.

Middle School Winners

1st – Alexandra Wan (G8) Alexandra’s oil painting featured a black skeleton smoking in the midst of swirling flames. The dramatic contrast and bold symbolism created a haunting, unforgettable image that explored fire’s destructive power.

2nd – Anna Tszin (G8) Anna painted a burning building inspired by a real-world tragic event. Her expressive brushwork and emotional storytelling brought depth and seriousness to the theme, honoring the story behind the artwork.

3rd – Jayda Ong (G7) Jayda’s painting of Chinese lanterns drifting into the night sky showcased fire as a symbol of hope and celebration. Her warm color palette and delicate details created a peaceful, uplifting scene.

High School Winners

1st – Hanning Du (G9) Hanning’s joyful watercolor depicted a cake with a slice removed, revealing a rainbow interior. The cake was topped with candle characters shaped like children, turning fire into a symbol of celebration, happiness, and imagination.

2nd – Hyosub Shin (G9) Hyosub created a layered collage filled with symbolic imagery that appeared to represent personal and emotional struggles. His complex composition invited viewers to interpret the meaning behind each element.

3rd – Max Popowitz (G12) Max’s powerful painting showed outstretched hands with fire emanating from the palms. The dramatic pose and intense energy made the piece visually striking and emotionally charged.

The SLAS Student Council hosted a schoolwide art competition around the theme “Fire,” inspiring students from Primary, Middle School, and High School to explore the idea through paintings, drawings, and 3D art. Their submissions reflected imagination, emotion, storytelling, and impressive technique across all grade levels.

A Celebration of Student Expression

Across all divisions, students used the theme of fire to explore joy, danger, hope, memory, and emotion. Their work demonstrated not only artistic skill but also thoughtful interpretation and storytelling. The SLAS Student Council organized and managed the entire competition, giving student artists a meaningful platform to share their voices and creativity.
